Wegovy is the first weight loss medication approved by the FDA to help prevent life-threatening cardiovascular occurrences in adults diagnosed with weight-related cardiovascular disease. Medical conditions linked to obesity and being chronically overweight include major cardiovascular events, including heart attacks and strokes. Rejuvime Medical prescribes Wegovy, a GLP-1 medication, in Louisiana, Mississippi, and throughout the Southeast.
Like other GLP-1 medications, such as Zepbound®, Wegovy is an injectable prescription medicine for patients with obesity or overweight and weight-related medical conditions. When combined with a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity, it helps patients lose excess body weight and keep it off.
Semaglutide is the active ingredient in Wegovy. It mimics the effects of a gut hormone called glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1), which is why it’s considered a GLP-1 agonist.
Clinical studies showed that most people using Wegovy lost between 5% and 15% of their body weight after taking the medication for 68 weeks. A large, long-term study of semaglutide, the active ingredient in Wegovy, found that patients with obesity but without diabetes continued losing weight for 65 weeks and sustained the weight loss for up to 4 years.
The benefits of Wegovy treatments extend beyond weight loss. A 2024 analysis found a significant reduction in the risk of suffering a heart attack or stroke for Wegovy patients, even those who didn’t lose significant weight. Other benefits include lower blood pressure and reduced total cholesterol and triglyceride levels. These improvements not only contribute to overall health but also reduce the risk of other chronic illnesses.
People who stop taking Wegovy may regain some of the weight they lost. However, those who incorporate exercise and a healthy diet as part of their weight loss treatments regain less weight than patients who didn’t make those lifestyle changes.
People participating in clinical trials using semaglutide tolerated the medication well, but they did experience some side effects. The most common side effects of Wegovy include nausea, diarrhea, vomiting, and constipation. These are often mild and transient, typically improving over time. This suggests that Wegovy is effective and safe for long-term use.
