At Rejuvime Medical, we help women and men defy aging both aesthetically and physiologically. One of the most popular options for looking refreshed is dermal fillers, which smooth wrinkles and add youthful volume to facial contours. We offer a range of dermal fillers, including products from Restylane® and JUVÉDERM®, in Baton Rouge, the New Orleans area, and other locations in Louisiana and Mississippi.

How Do Fillers Work?

The active ingredient in fillers such as JUVÉDERM and Restylane is hyaluronic acid (HA), a synthetic version of a substance that occurs naturally in the body. In addition to adding volume and hydration to the skin, hyaluronic acid serves other beneficial purposes, including:

  • Keeping joints lubricated
  • Providing youthful volume in the face
  • Repairing injured tissue

Aging skin loses volume and hydration as the production of hyaluronic acid and collagen slows down. Fillers replace what has been lost, with different consistencies addressing different areas of the face. The gel-like substances produce results you can see immediately. Younger patients also get fillers to enhance facial contours and to create fuller lips.

Who Is a Good Candidate for Fillers?

The versatility of fillers makes them an effective treatment for many signs of aging. Both the JUVÉDERM and Restylane product lines include specialized fillers formulated to address specific areas, such as the cheeks, lips, and under the eyes.

Some of the most common reasons people get fillers are to:

  • Smooth out facial wrinkles, both fine and deep-set
  • Restore volume in hollow or flattened areas of the face, such as the cheekbones
  • Enhance lips and minimize lines around the mouth
  • Reduce dark circles around the eyes

The injectors at Rejuvime Medical have the expertise to know which filler or fillers are best suited for your concerns. They will work with you to create a treatment plan that will achieve the results you want.

What Is the Dermal Filler Process Like?

Injecting fillers takes only a few minutes. The process begins with cleaning the treatment area. Some patients opt to have a topical anesthetic applied about 30 minutes before the treatment to numb the skin. Our injectors take a conservative approach to ensure natural-looking results. They may gently massage the area to help the filler spread.

You can return immediately to your normal activities, although you may experience some redness and swelling at the injection sites for a few hours. You can minimize post-injection bruising and swelling by following the instructions we’ll provide, which includes:

  • Avoiding alcohol and blood-thinning, over-the-counter medications such as aspirin, ibuprofen (Advil), and Aleve. You should stop taking these a week before the appointment.
  • Stop taking supplements, including St. John’s wort, Gingko biloba, primrose oil, garlic, ginseng, and Vitamin E.
  • Start taking arnica a couple of days before the injections to reduce bruising.

What’s the Difference Between Fillers and BOTOX®?

Dermal fillers address different types of wrinkles than those treated with BOTOX injections. Fillers treat “static” wrinkles caused by the natural aging process, sun exposure, and other environmental factors. BOTOX, on the other hand, smooths expression lines or “dynamic” wrinkles that develop from the contraction of facial muscles. Because they treat different types of wrinkles, we often combine fillers and BOTOX injections at the same appointment.
