Hormonal changes can cause the skin to become thin and lax. Women, for example, can lose up to 30% of their skin’s collagen during the first few years of menopause. That leads to the development of expression lines like crow’s feet, frown lines, and forehead furrows that can age you. At Rejuvime Medical, we treat these with BOTOX and Dysport® injections in Baton Rouge, the New Orleans area, and our other locations in Louisiana and Mississippi.

How Does BOTOX Work?

BOTOX and Dysport are neuromodulators that block the signals that cause the muscle contractions responsible for frowning, squinting, and other facial expressions. Over time, those contractions result in “expression lines” or “dynamic wrinkles.” The FDA has approved BOTOX and Dysport for use in treating dynamic wrinkles, with results lasting about 3 to 4 months.

Who Is a Good Candidate for BOTOX and Dysport?

Women and men typically start thinking about getting BOTOX injections when they notice the lines that form when they smile, squint, or look surprised, persisting even when their faces are at rest. This occurs as collagen production declines. We use BOTOX or Dysport to treat patients in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

What Does BOTOX Treat?

The most common targets for BOTOX and Dysport injections include:

  • Horizontal forehead lines
  • Glabellar frown lines between the eyes (also called the “11s”)
  • Brow lines
  • Crow’s feet
  • Bunny lines along the bridge of the nose

Does BOTOX Hurt?

Most of our neuromodulator patients are pleasantly surprised at how little discomfort is involved in their injections. The needle we use is tiny, and injections are very quick. Most people compare the pinch of a BOTOX injection to an insect bite.

What Is Recovery Like after BOTOX or Dysport?

There is no downtime following a BOTOX or Dysport treatment, although there are a few things you should avoid. You shouldn’t lie down, rub the injection site, exercise or sweat heavily, or drink alcohol for several hours after the treatment. There is usually no visible swelling or bruising after the treatment.

How Long Does BOTOX Last?

BOTOX and Dysport results last about 3 to 4 months, depending on the areas treated, the amount of product used, and the individual. You can enjoy seamless results by scheduling periodic touch-up treatments. With regular treatments, many patients find they gradually need less BOTOX or Dysport to maintain their results.

BOTOX vs. Dysport: What’s the Difference?

One of the main differences between Dysport and BOTOX is the areas in which they are approved for use. Dysport is primarily used to correct glabellar lines, the frown lines between your eyebrows. It is a great option for those who have moderate to severe frown lines.

On the other hand, BOTOX treats wrinkles in many different areas, including crow’s feet, forehead wrinkles, and laugh lines. If you have mild to moderate wrinkles, BOTOX may be a better option for you.

What’s the Difference Between BOTOX and Fillers?

Even though neuromodulators and dermal fillers are both injectable treatments designed to minimize wrinkles and fine lines, they accomplish their goals in very different ways.

As mentioned earlier, BOTOX and Dysport target lines that develop when your face changes expressions by preventing muscles from contracting. Dermal fillers, such as the JUVÉDERM® and Restylane® product lines, are smooth gels that add volume to areas such as nasolabial folds, under-eye hollows, and sunken cheeks. Fillers also last longer than BOTOX and other neuromodulators, with results lasting between 6 and 18 months in most cases.

Because fillers and BOTOX treat different types of wrinkles, we often combine them to produce comprehensive anti-aging results.
