How Do I Talk to My Spouse About Starting HRT?

Rejuvime Medical • February 18, 2020

Choosing to start hormone replacement therapy (HRT) is a very personal decision. At our Baton Rouge-area practice, we remind patients that everyone experiences aging—there is absolutely nothing to be ashamed of.  Unfortunately, sometimes men and women can feel uncomfortable talking about their hormone struggles. They may be unsure of how to broach the subject and explain to friends or family what treatment entails.

Keeping communication open with your loved ones during the HRT process is essential. Here are a few helpful guidelines for talking with your spouse or partner about this important decision.

Be honest about your symptoms

It’s normal to experience low energy, low libido, and other symptoms as you age. There is no reason to feel embarrassed. If you’re considering HRT therapy, it is most likely because you’re suffering from a variety of painful aging issues. Be very clear and forthright about your struggles when talking to your partner, so they can better understand why you’re interested in HRT.

Get educated

The science behind HRT can be somewhat complicated to explain. Hormones and supplements and IV vitamin infusions can be a lot to take in at once. It’s smart to do plenty of research before your HRT treatments, so you have a better grasp of the terminology when explaining topics to your partner.

You can also bring your spouse to your personal consultation so they can directly ask our staff any pressing questions. Your spouse also can be another helpful set of ears at your consultation. They can help you remember the details of your consultation, and they can be a vital sounding board for discussing your treatment options.

Advocate for yourself

Undergoing HRT is about one thing: making you feel like your best self again. There are many customizable options you can include in your anti-aging treatment. Patients should advocate for themselves and not be afraid to seek out new options and explore every treatment possibility. Explain your goals to your doctor and spouse so they can work with you to best achieve your goals.

Be open throughout the process

Results aren’t always instant. Therapy is a journey. It can take a few months for you to start feeling the full effects of HRT. Be sure to stay very frank with your spouse so they are aware of what you’re feeling and experiencing. By keeping them in the loop, you have a better support system and feel more confident in the process.

Talking about medical issues can make you feel very vulnerable. But if you’re struggling with the energy-draining, libido-sapping side effects of aging, don’t be afraid to seek help. By working as a team with your partner throughout your HRT process, you can start feeling the benefits of therapy both inside and out.

Low libido can affect confidence, relationships, and overall well-being. While stress, lifestyle, and emotional factors all play a role, one of the most common and often overlooked causes is hormone imbalance. When hormone levels are out of sync, both men and women may notice changes in sexual desire and performance . Understanding Libido and Hormones Libido, or sexual desire, is a complex process influenced by the brain, body, and emotions. Hormones act as the body’s chemical messengers, controlling everything from mood and metabolism to reproductive health. When hormone levels shift too high or too low, they can disrupt sexual desire. The three most important hormones connected to libido are testosterone, estrogen, and progesterone. Each one influences sexual health differently, but all three work together to maintain balance.
