Our anti-aging clinic in Metairie offers a variety of great services that can help you reverse the effects of aging, including hormone therapy, nutrient therapy, and cosmetic injectables. There are a number of things that you can do at home to help yourself look younger, including how you eat and how you do your makeup. If you are still doing your makeup the same way you did it 20 years ago, you aren’t freezing time; you are probably just making yourself look older. Here are some of our best tips for changing up your makeup routine to keep looking younger.
How to Use Makeup to Look Younger When You are Getting Older
Start with a good moisturizer.
Moisturizer is the key to youthful looking skin. It hydrates your skin, which is rapidly losing moisture as you get older, the leading cause of wrinkles. But replacing the moisture in your skin and protecting it from environmental effects, you are helping it stay youthful looking. The benefits don’t stop there, though. By moisturizing your skin before you apply makeup, you prevent your foundation from settling into the fine lines and wrinkles on your skin, which can highlight them and make you look older.
Prime your eyes.
You can help keep your eye makeup from aging you prematurely by using a primer around your eyes. This will help keep your eye makeup from settling into those fine eye lines (just like your moisturizer did for your face). It will also keep your eye makeup from moving around your eye, so that artfully applied eyeshadow doesn’t end up migrating and making you look older.
Scrub your lips.
Plump lips are a sign of youthfulness. As you get older, your lips will start to lose some of their fullness and shape. You can help maintain that full look by giving them a good scrub and getting rid of dead skin. Use an exfoliator that’s made for the lips in order to prevent damaging them. Once they’ve been scrubbed, you can apply a moisturizing lip color and you’ll notice the difference.
Use a lighter hand.
Youthful faces can take heavier coats of makeup. While you might be tempted to use more product in order to cover up the signs of aging, you’ll be better off using less of it. Too much foundation and concealer are especially problematic on older skin. Apply them with sponges or brushes to avoid using too much product.
Tone down the color.
Just like you should start using less product, it’s a good idea to start switching to a more muted color palette as well. Avoid bright shades of eye shadow, especially, as these can make you look much older. Look for palettes of lovely neutrals, and a little glitter never hurt anyone, either. You’ll have a little more flexibility with lip color, though; bright lips look good on a woman at any age.
Our Final Piece of Advice
Don’t be afraid to try new things or seek out the advice of a professional. Just because that’s always how you’ve done your makeup doesn’t mean that’s how you should continue to do it. Things like the color of your skin change as you get older, so you’ll need to make sure the foundation you are using still works for you. They may have other tips and tricks and be able to teach you useful skills like highlighting that you didn’t use when you were younger.
At the end of the day, though, it’s your face…if you love the way your bright blue eyeshadow looks on you, then go for it! Your makeup routine should be about making you feel and look your very best.
